Ongoing Community Service Projects

Parkview Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

Located in the heart of urban Atlanta with a commitment to quality in rehabilitation, specialty health care, and long-term eldercare services, they are dedicated to improving the comfort, strength, mobility and independence of their residents and patients. In hopes of having an impact in the lives of these residents we have marked this as one of our signature projects. The sisters of Deborah and brothers of McCoy Lodge #181 participated in a St. Patrick’s Day program for the residents. We played games and presented our rendition of musical chairs. The residents received prizes for their participation. A great time was had by all. We must be mindful that without our elders many things would not have been possible, with that in mind they can not be forgotten.

Atlanta Community Food Bank Hunger Walk/Run

For over 20 years, the Hunger Walk/Run has united Atlantans of all ages and athletic backgrounds to support hunger and poverty relief. Thousands of participants come together each March to raise more than $300,000.

Thanksgiving Day Baskets
The Sisters of Deborah 165 and The Brothers of McCoy #181 provided Thanksgiving Day Basketsfor 5 economically disadvantaged families. The baskets included everything needed for a scrumptious meal including dessert.

Atlanta Day Shelter for Women & Children

There are more than 13,000 people in the city of Atlanta that wake up in the mornings with no place to call home, 2,500 of those are children. The Day Shelter provides free quality day care, emotional support, an educational curriculum for homeless children and social services for their families. This particular day the Sisters and Brothers sorted and arranged clothing items at the shelter. This provided the families with an opportunity to receive clothing which other wise they would not have received because the clothing closet was in such disarray with the over crowding of donations and no one to organize them. As the women and children came in to receive their clothing they thanked us for our generosity with hopes that we would return again.

Village Keepers “Back to School Drive

Village Keepers is a non-profit organization that helps families in need in the Fulton County area. They also work with foster care programs and juveniles to empower the youth. The Sisters and Brothers of Masonry provided the youth with back packs and various other school supplies.

Parkview Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

To complete the year we returned to Parkview Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and decorated the common areas and Christmas Tree for the holiday. We started this project in 2006, it brought so much joy to the residents that we decided to do it again this year. As we all know the Christmas Holiday is very hard on those who have lost loved ones or don’t have any family members at all to celebrate the holiday with. That’s why we see it as a necessity to commit to this service project every year.

Past Community Service Projects

Benjamin E. Mays High School Beautification Project

In our continuous effort to aide the Metro Atlanta community, we began 2008’ with the Annual Hands On Atlanta MLK Service Summit 2008. This year we participated in the Benjamin E. Mays High School Beautification Project. There were an overwhelming 208 volunteers that came together on one accord to make the learning environment for the children more relaxing.

Hands On Atlanta Martin Luther King Jr. Service Summit 2007

In our commitment to service in the community, Deborah #165 jumped the year off with the Hands On Atlanta Martin Luther King Jr. Service Summit 2007, in remembrance of the King Holiday, a day on not a day off. The Sisters of Deborah participated in the “Clean The Dream, A Jericho Road Project” in efforts to beautify the Vine City community. The sisters removed large shrubbery, broken bottles, mattresses, appliances, intravenous drug needles and other paraphernalia from the front of a historic abandoned church in the neighborhood which now is home for squatters.

Girl Scout Troop North West Georgia #27500

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. We have marked this as one of our signature projects, it includes Daisies, Brownies, Juniors and Studio 2b. These future stars are led by Sis Kami Everson-troop leader, Sis Shandrea McCant, Sis Cynthia Stewart and Sis Nan Walker. We work with these young girls year round but in June we gave them a Cookout/Pool Party.
